GM Loses Sales Crown For 2008

| Uncategorized | January 21, 2009

gm logoWhen people say that GM is the world€™s largest car maker, what they€™re referring to is that they sell more cars in every market across the globe than any other car maker. That statement of fact has been accurate for the last 77 years and is what made GM one of the largest most valuable corporations for several decades, despite their current teetering on bankruptcy. Now in addition to their current financial troubles, GM has lost its sales crown for 2008 to Toyota after a virtual tie for 2007.

Final numbers are being put together now but it seems that GM sold a total of 8.35 million vehicles worldwide, while Toyota sold 8.97 million vehicles across the globe. GM fell behind by about 600k vehicles. While not as important, at least GM could look to their total sales volume as a bright side while trying to overcome their dire overall financial situation going on several years now. Both GM and Toyota know that this single measure of success is largely symbolic and will continue to focus on the strength and profitability of their business, because if this bit of news proves one thing it€™s that manufacturing and selling over 8 million pretty pricey items has absolutely nothing to do with profitability.
