Ten most stolen vehicles of 2007

The National Insurance Crime Bureau(NICB) has released its annual report on auto theft. The ’95 Honda Civic was the most popular vehicle with thieves in 2007, followed by its big brother, the ’91 Honda Accord. These models’ popularity is due in part to not getting a redesign for several model years, meaning that parts are pretty interchangeable among a large population of cars. Another reason is that they sold in good numbers and many are still on the road, while some say they are just easy to break into.

The good news here is that overall theft was down in 2007, as it has been for the last several years. “The continuing national decrease in vehicle theft is a positive sign that the fight against vehicle theft by law enforcement, the insurance industry and the NICB continues to be effective,” said Robert M. Bryant, NICB’s chief executive in a statement.

It may surprise some that most of the cars fall into the “..who would steal this??” category as they are all older cars. But they are popular and show that you should use some common sense precautions with any car that you own. The easiest things you can do are to make sure your car is always locked and do not have the keys inside them. Additionally, you can install the usual alarms, kill switches, and fuel-cutoff kits.
